History of the Beach House

The Annenberg Community Beach House sits on a site steeped in Hollywood glamour. In the 1920s, publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst built a sprawling 110-room mansion and several guest houses for actress Marion Davies. This opulent estate was the site of legendary parties attended by the biggest stars of the era. After being converted into a private hotel and club, the main mansion was eventually demolished, but the original guest house and the beautiful tiled swimming pool remained. In 2009, thanks to a generous $27.5 million gift from the Annenberg Foundation, the site was transformed into the public facility it is today, preserving its historic charm while making it accessible to everyone in the community.

For those who prefer to avoid the traffic, the Beach House is easily accessible via the Marvin Braude Bike Trail, which runs directly past the facility. It's also a pleasant walk from North Beach or a short trip from the Santa Monica Stairs. Public transportation options like the Big Blue Bus also have stops nearby, making it a convenient destination for everyone.
