40. Sailing lessons in the Santa Monica Bay

Sailing offers a unique connection to nature. There is no engine noise—just the sound of the wind in the sails and the hull cutting through the water. The Santa Monica Bay, with its generally consistent afternoon breezes, provides an excellent environment for learning.

While Santa Monica doesn't have its own boat harbor, the massive Marina del Rey is just a few minutes south. Numerous sailing schools and yacht clubs operate out of the marina, offering everything from introductory afternoon lessons to multi-day certification courses.

Learning to sail gives you a completely different perspective of the coastline. Looking back at the Santa Monica Pier, the beaches, and the mountains from a few miles offshore is a breathtaking view that few visitors get to experience.

Do I need prior experience to take a lesson?

Not at all. Introductory sailing lessons are designed specifically for complete beginners with no prior boating experience.

What should I wear?

Dress in layers, as it is often cooler on the water than on land. Wear non-marking, closed-toe shoes (like deck shoes or sneakers), a hat, and plenty of sunscreen.
